Types of Filter Presses

APN family Filter Presses come with numerous configurations. APN filter presses can be fitted with plates of
- different sizes,
- materials,
- configurations (chamber or membrane) and
- with a range of filter plate pack opening solutions

The new family of APNH filter presses comprises heavy-duty, high-capacity equipment developed specifically to dewater metal ores, industrial ores, coal and tailings.
APNH filter presses are designed specifically for use with highly demanding heavy duty processes such as operations to dewater coal, mine tailings, industrial minerals, soil and mineral ore concentrates. Thanks to a combination of efficient drying, draining and squeezing operations, low moisture cakes are achieved.

Yes. TH Group solutions can be integrated into both new industrial developments and existing plant operations requiring upgrades, optimisation, or expansion.
Does the target mineral affect how a filter press should be configured?
Yes, the target mineral affects filter press configuration. Higher-value concentrates such as copper and nickel generally need a drier cake for concentrate quality and dry-stacking, while coal and tailings applications tend to prioritise throughput. Transmin configures the plate pack and pressing method to match the mineral and site requirements.
What filter press configuration suits mine tailings dry-stacking — recessed plate, membrane, or automatic?
Both recessed plate and membrane filter presses are fully automatic, with PLC-controlled cake discharge suited to continuous operation. Recessed plate presses typically run at 10–15 bar and suit tailings that dewater well under filtration pressure alone. Membrane presses add a diaphragm squeeze in each chamber after filtration, achieving 3–8% additional moisture reduction, which suits fine, slow-draining tailings. The right choice depends on the tailings characteristics and moisture target needed for stable stacking, balanced against capital cost.
How does membrane technology speed up tailings dewatering cycles?
Membrane filter presses speed up dewatering by adding a mechanical pressing step after filtration. Once each chamber is filled, a diaphragm inside the chamber inflates and squeezes extra moisture from the cake beyond what filtration pressure alone achieves. This is most effective on fine, slow-draining tailings, cutting cycle time and increasing throughput per shift.
Beyond dewatering itself, what’s the operational payoff of a filter press in a mining operation?
A filter press pays back beyond dewatering through water recovery and reduced haulage cost. Recovering water reduces reliance on raw water on site, and a drier cake weighs less to truck or convey to the tailings stack. For many operations, these savings are as significant to the business case as the filtration performance itself.
